The Reed Homestead is a standing testament to two centuries of Townsend’s heritage. But the modest frame exterior conceals an unexpected treasure: an interior on which murals were painted by the extraordinary Rufus Porter — a prolific pioneer of ideas who left his mark in art, technology, and journalism, and is best known for having founded Scientific American magazine.

On Saturday, September 10, the Townsend Republican Town Committee invites friends and residents of Townsend to to participate in a wine demonstration and tasting, followed by a tour of the Reed Homestead, led by guides who will link the house’s history to the varied adventures of the artist whose work still graces the walls.
Automobile parking on the Reed property is limited. Additional parking is available a short walk west, at the historic Harbor Church.

Please observe that parking space at The Cooperage is reserved for antique-shop customers.

This event is sponsored by the Townsend Republican Town Committee with the cooperation and assistance of the Townsend Historical Society.
